本書為甘為霖（Rev. William Campbell）所作，主要選譯自下述書籍：1. Valentijn的《新舊東印度誌》及Candidius的福爾摩沙記述；2. Grothe《近代初期荷蘭宣教史檔案集》；3. C. E. S. 《被遺誤的福爾摩沙》。書中並附有其他資料及註解。Davidson極為推崇Campbell，認為他對臺灣早期歷史的研究相當廣博，無疑是當代的權威（His researches into the early history of the island have been very extensive, and he is without doubt the greatest authority on this subject living）。此書有中譯本如下：李雄揮譯，《荷據下的福爾摩莎》（臺北：前衛，2003）。
